Safety Car

30 years of FIA F1 Safety Cars with the star – tradition since 1996

The Safety Car with the three-pointed star has been a familiar sight at Grand Prix circuits around the world since 1996. Over the past 30 years, high-performance models such as the Mercedes-Benz CL 55 AMG, the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG and the spectacular SLS AMG gullwing model, developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG, have been used.

The first deployment of a Safety Car with the star dates back to 30 June 1996. At Magny-Cours, Mercedes-Benz appeared for the first time with a Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG as the FIA F1® Safety and Medical Car. This means that Mercedes-AMG will be celebrating a special anniversary in 2026: for 30 years now, the brand with the star has stood for safety in Formula 1®.

Only last year, at the F1® Grand Prix in Austin, the 500th deployment of a Safety Car was marked. Between 1996 and 2026, a total of 14 different models were used as Safety Cars and eight different models as Medical Cars.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ succeeds the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series - which has served as the Official FIA F1 Safety Car since 2022 - from the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix onwards.

The most recent addition has all the necessary credentials for this tough job. Its 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 450 kW (612 hp) and a maximum torque of 850 Nm.

For the first time in the history of the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system is used. It provides optimum traction in both dry and wet conditions.

Since 2000, the Safety Car has been driven by former DTM driver Bernd Mayländer.

Medical Car

The fastest and most powerful Medical Car in F1 history

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is the Official FIA F1 Medical Car since the 2022 season. It is Mercedes-AMG's seventh Official Medical Car in the FIA Formula One World Championship.

Like the Safety Car, its V8 engine, AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, dynamic engine mounts and electronic rear locking differential are the same as in the regular road version.

The standard-fit AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension on the Medical Car offers the perfect set-up for fast racetrack duty with three to four people and emergency equipment on-board.

During the race, the Official F1 Medical Car waits on standby in the pit lane alongside the Safety Car. To keep an eye on the race, there are three tablets and an additional monitor for the electronic rear-view mirror installed in the dashboard on the passenger side. Like the Safety Car, the Medical Car also has an InCar Hotspot and WLAN.

Throughout the race weekend, the vehicles guarantee maximum safety not just in the Formula 1 races themselves but also all the other races that make up the full programme. Three highly qualified AMG technicians take expert care of the vehicles throughout the entire season.
